Things to Do Near Eagle River, Alaska

Right in Eagle River

The Eagle River Nature Center is minutes away and worth half a day at least. Walk the boardwalk trails through the valley, watch salmon run in late summer, and keep an eye out for moose and bears (from a respectful distance). Chugach State Park, one of the largest state parks in the country, starts practically at our doorstep, with hikes from easy valley strolls to serious alpine climbs. In town you will find grocery stores, restaurants, and everything practical within a 10-minute drive.

Anchorage day trips (25 to 40 minutes)

Downtown Anchorage makes an easy day out. Walk the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail along the water, visit the Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and browse the shops and restaurants downtown. The Alaska Zoo is about 30 minutes away and a hit with kids. In winter, the Fur Rondon festival fills downtown with sled dog races and snow sculptures.

Skiing and glaciers

Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, about an hour away, is Alaska's premier ski mountain, with a scenic tram ride worth doing even in summer. For something unforgettable, drive to Matanuska Glacier for a guided glacier trek, or book a flightseeing tour that lands on a glacier. Both are doable as long summer day trips.

Wildlife and scenery

Summer brings options in every direction: a day cruise from Whittier or Seward into Kenai Fjords, fishing charters, and wildlife tours. Fall paints the mountains gold and red. Winter is aurora season, plus cross-country skiing and dog sledding nearby.
